We have discussed about the importance of having a good data center disaster recovery plan. And central to this plan is to have online computer backups.
Location of Offline Storage Devices
Why do I say this? When people make backups on offline data storage devices, more often than not, they store them at the same data center or at an office within the same building.
So these data storage devices are also exposed to whatever threats or vulnerabilities that the data center face.
Some may store it in an offsite premise but things are often done haphazardly and not well organized. I even know of one company where the staff take turns bringing home the backup data on CDs!
You can imagine the chaos that happens when the CDs brought home are re-used by family members or 'lost' in the clutter of the house!
Management of Data Storage
Another thing about storing data onsite is that you have to worry about the management of the data backup devices and storage.
It takes a lot of work and organization to handle this properly, keeping track of where the data are stored, clear labeling of backups and having good and well followed backup procedures.
But the truth of the matter is that not all data centers of companies are equipped to handle this level of work. And often, it is one of the staff who will double up as a data administrator and because of the amount of work involved, his productivity for the company falls.
Online Data Computer Storage Systems
When you backup your files with an online server, you are freed from all these hassles. You will have the ability to organize your backups easily and retrieve them without any problems. You can assign access controls and not worry about setting up security protocols in place as these online data centers would have already done that for you.
Also, these online computer backups are often at locations away from your main data center or office. And they have their own backup centers around the world.
So you have ease of mind that any major threats to your company will not affect your precious backups. For any data center recovery plan, this is a great plus point.
Once you move onto online computer backups, you will also reap side benefits like increased productivity. Your computer resources are no longer bogged down by backup activities. Your staff will be able to focus more on their daily activities rather than on backup procedures. And because of the organized filing system of the online backup system, you can easily access the files you need anytime you want.
We repeat this mantra that we hold dear to our hearts - a good data center disaster recovery plan needs to include a computer backup system that provides online computer backups. This should be your first consideration in any disaster recover plan.
One of the easiest way to start is with a great software we found called Genie Backup Manager. You can find out more information here or get a free trial software to test it out. Go on, give it a try. You have nothing to lose, except your precious computer data.

Good Data Center Disaster Recovery Plan Means Online Computer Backups
Data Center Disaster Recovery Plan - the very phrase strikes fear and pain in all data and system administrators and businesses.
After the 911 disaster, many businesses were educated on the importance of having good data center disaster recovery plans. Businesses that had them in place were able to recover faster and back in operation not long after. All the important data of the companies were backed up and they were quickly restored so that business returned to normal as soon as possible (if only lives could return to normal after that terrible incident). But for those business without any disaster recover plan, the road to recovery was indeed a painful one in more ways than one.
But as years passed, it was also hard to take it that while companies talk about the importance of having a strong and resilient data center disaster recovery plan, many are still not prepared. There is a clear distinction between knowing what a plan is and actually developing a robust and workable recovery plan.
Many factors needs to be considered when you are developing a data center disaster recovery plan. However, it is most important to start of with getting the right computer backup system that makes secure and reliable online computer backups.
The heart of every data center disaster recovery plan is the computer backup systems. Without it, there is no backup, meaning no recovery. There is no two ways about it and the best way to backup data is to have online computer backups.
When you talk about backups, there are many ways of doing it. In the past, data was backed up in floppies, diskettes, hard drives and DAT tapes. Recently there has also been backups done on DVDs, Blue-Ray Discs and portable harddisks.
While all these solution works to a certain degree, there is nothing better than backing up your valuable computer data onto an online server.
In the next post, I will give some reasons why online computer backups are so useful.
In the meantime, you can download a trial copy of a highly recommended online computer backup software to test by clicking here.
